When I was growing up, my room was my cozy nest—a tangle of blankets, books stacked in precarious towers, and scattered notebooks filled with ideas. My mother, who called my room a mess, not a nest, made their bed every single morning. No exceptions. Our home wasn’t fancy, but my parents' bedroom always felt like a sanctuary—neat, peaceful, and put together. As a child, I didn’t see the point. Why make the bed when you were just going to get back in it at night?
Then I went to college. In my tiny dorm room, every inch counted. An unmade bed made the whole space feel unbearably messy. So, I started making my bed every day. Later, in my first apartments, I realized that if my bed was made, I didn’t mind if I was behind on picking up papers and books. Somehow, making the bed made everything else feel more manageable.
The Power of Small Acts
We all have those moments when a big task looms over us, and breaking it into smaller steps doesn’t help—because we aren’t doing those steps either. We’re stuck in overwhelm, caught in a cycle of avoidance and self-reproach.
But what if the way forward wasn’t through the task itself? What if it was through something else—something small, something easy, something that gives you the feeling you need right now?
For me, making the bed creates an instant shift. For you, it might be washing the dishes, taking a walk, or journaling before you start working. It doesn’t have to be directly related to the task at hand—it just needs to create the feeling you want more of.
Once you feel organized, capable, or calm, suddenly, the impossible thing feels more doable.
The Exceptions: Triggers and Resistance
Of course, not every small act works for every person. When I first started coaching, I suggested bed-making to everyone. It seemed universal—who wouldn’t want to feel calm and organized? But I quickly learned that for some, making the bed wasn’t a peaceful ritual; it was a reminder of childhood power struggles, of nagging parents and arguments. Instead of creating calm, it triggered resentment.
That’s when I realized: The key is finding what works for you. If making the bed brings up resistance, then it’s not your thing. Maybe for you, it’s brewing a fresh cup of tea or putting on a favorite playlist. The goal isn’t the act itself—it’s the shift in feeling.
How to Find Your Reset Button
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just scattered, ask yourself:
What small thing makes me feel calm, capable, or grounded?
What’s something I can do right now that requires no mental resistance?
What creates a sense of order or peace in my space, and therefore in me?
Start there. Do that. And notice what happens.
Connect with Your Heart’s Wisdom
Shifting our energy first makes it much easier to take on the big thing. We don’t have to wait until we’ve completed the task to feel how we want to feel—we can cultivate that feeling first. Sometimes, it starts with something small—something that brings us back to a state of ease, clarity, and connection. If you're looking for a simple way to shift your energy and feel more in control, these small acts—like making your bed or practicing Heart Metta™—can help.
Heart Metta™ works in a similar way. It’s a gentle but profound energy healing practice that helps you access the wisdom of your own heart, guiding you back to a place of inner balance. Just like making the bed or journaling can create an immediate shift in how you feel, Heart Metta™ offers a way to reconnect with yourself, creating the inner calm and confidence that makes everything else feel more manageable.
If you’re seeking more than just a quick reset, Heart Metta™ can help you cultivate deep, lasting emotional balance. This practice isn’t just about stillness—it’s about harnessing the heart’s powerful energy to shift your mindset, ease overwhelm, and bring clarity to your life.
